Armor - is an attribute that reduces the amount of physical damage a unit takes. It depends on armor, damage block and type of armor. Units with negative armor values increase any physical damage they receive. 

Higher armor values reduce more damage.

 

 

 

Armor can be increased by:

  • Agility + 1 armor point agility points.
  • Some abilities (For example, passive ability of dragon_knight Dragon Knight)
  • Some items (For example, Plate Mail). Most of the items in the shop are focused on armor.

Resistance

Now we consider reducing and increasing damage due to the armor.

 

Formula for positive armor value

((0.06 × armor) ÷ (1 + 0.06 × armor)) × 100 - reduced damage

 

Formula for negative armor value

1 - 0.94 - armor- increased damage

 

Armor cannot be reduced below −20 (71% damage increase).

Further reducing the armor will not change the damage increase, except visual display (-21, -22 etc.).

Extra damage depending on armor

 

Basing on formulas and graphics, let's consider effective armor values​​.

 

Negative armor values

As a further reduction of armor, damage increase is not much reduced - you can always reduce the maximum armor.  
If you have the opportunity to reduce enemy's armor until -20 - do not shrink from this opportunity. 
Items for armor reduction are quite effective for heroes who have the ability to reduce the armor.
 

Positive armor values

  • Armor increases 0 - 5( 0 %=>23% ) more effectively than 5 - 10( 23% => 37.5%). It is more iffective than 10 - 15( 37.5% =>47.4% ) itc.
  • Approximately ideal armor value +25( 60% damage block)
    You need additional +55 armor for 20% damage block.
  • Agility heroes do not need items for armor increasing because they have high basic armor value and good armor growth. Most items for DPS add enough armor ( Butterfly Ethereal Blade Manta Style Satanic Eye of Skadi).
    For Strength heroes there are recommended the following items:   Assault Cuirras Blade Mail Satanic Shiva's Guard,  Armlet of Mordiggian.
    Intelligent heroes are dependant on team's auras as they often have no opportunity to purchase a lot of items. But they also can purchase the following items:   Veil of Discord Medallion of Courage Mekansm Shiva's Guard)
  • In the early and mid game heroes with low armor values can purchase  Ring of Basilius(aura) Vladmir's Offering(aura),   Mekansm(aura + Restore)
  • If enemy has about 25 armor (he purchased items or it is mid-late game), purchasing  Desolator won't help you if there is no opportunity to reduce significantly this value.
  • If you play against heroes who have big pure damage (enchantress Enchantressobsidian_destroyer Outworld Devourersilencer Silencer ), instead of increasing your armor it is better to think about the direct increase in health, Dodge or   BKB)
  • Enemy team can have items for armor reduction or abilities for armor reduction, so you need to increase armor value higher than 25
  • Example of damage increase:
    For example you are a hero with 1500 hp and 15 armor. You can resist 2800 points of physical damage.
     Slardar Slardar with  Assault Cuirras is next to you and he ultimated on you with his ability of 3rd level. Your armor value will be -10 and you will resist only 1026 of physical damage (almost 2.8 times less)

 

Killing Roshan

The main association with killing Roshan is Time. К

Right using abilities and items will let you to kill him easily.

Let's consider the situation when the following heroes are killing Roshan:  Vengeful Spirit,  Slardar,  Shadow Fiend,  Alchemist.

 

Now, you see he creep with 7500 hp and 3 armor.

It WAS before we used:  Wave of Terror Acid Spray Amplify Damage, and add   Medallion of Courage. So now Roshan has negative armor value -20 (do not forget about   Presence of the Dark Lord).

 

Thus, Roshan gets twice more damage (1.71). It allows us to kill him twice faster.

Each creature or building in Dota 2 has its own type of damage and armor although game interface doesn't show it.

The best armor is Hero and Fortified. It resists to certain types of damage and almost doesn't have any damage resources.

 

The others receive increased or full damage from the most types of damage, and in some cases slight decrease damage.

Hero armor

All Dota 2 heroes have this type of armor.

This type of armor reduces damage of almost all types of damage.

 

Hero or Chaos types deal full damage and they are effective for killing hero.

Fortified armor

Buildings and some units have this typ of armor. It has the following feature: 
 
  • This type of armor gets reduced damage as it is the most strong type of armor in the game. 
  • Siege creep's damage is increased.
  • Heroes deal 50% damage to units/buildings with such type of armor.
  • Some types of abilities deal increased damage to buildings.

Summing up the above tables, we can make a conclusion.
If a hero wants to destroy a building he need to deal the following amount of damage:

  • 1 level Towers - ~5720 damage;
  • 2 level Towers - ~7040 damage;
  • 3 level tower - ~8000 damage;
  • 4 level damage - ~8960 damage;
  • Melee barracks - ~5700 damage;
  • Range barracks - ~3120 damage;
  • Thrones - ~16150 damage;
  • Other buildings - ~1600 damage.

 

 Glyph of Fortification is an additional ability given to every player. It allows to make all allied buildings invulnerable for 5 seconds. Cooldown: 5 minutes.

Deals damage to buildings (> 45,5% to towers): explosion damage - 6/11/17/23;

Disables allied and enemy buildings - they can not attack.

Duration: 4/4.5/5. Radius: 450.
Duration with  Aghanim's Scepter: 4/5/6.

naga_siren Naga Siren -  Song of the Siren Buildings are invulnerabile and can not attack.
Duration: 7 sec. Radius: 1250. 
treant Treant Protector -  Living armor Allows to block damage and instances 4/5/6/7 attacks.
Damage block: 20/40/60/80. Duration: 15 sec.
Grants health regeneration: 4/7/10/13 в sec.

 

 

Triggered heals or pseudo-evasion

Despite the name - "Heal" - tells us about the health restoration, it is not like that. We talking about evasion. Triggers define unit's health at a certain value, in order to reduce or avoid damage.
There are two types of triggered heals:

  • Pre-heal - heals the unit before it is damaged (add health points to unit before damage);
  • Dynamic heal - situatiinal (determines if it should heal before, after or some before and some after damage.).

Unlike DotA, in Dota 2 there are no restrictions on the maximum HP. For example:

  •  Backtrack works even if hero's HP is full.
  •  Shallow Grave don not allow to die even if damage is more than maximum unit's HP value (except  Culling Blade)

 

Picularities

  1. Triggered heals activate upon a unit receiving damage using the EVENT_UNIT_DAMAGED function (that's why all above-mentioned abilities are not react on Direct HP Removal).
  2. As unit gets damage (although unit gets heal from it), all additional effects are still in force. For example
    sven Sven and his  Storm Bolt - in case of  Backtrack, doesn't deal damage but stuns.
    mirana Mirana and   Sacred Arrow - in case of  Backtrack, doesn't deal damage, but stuns.
    Ursa Ursa and  Fury swipers - in case of   Backtrack, damage still stacks.
    Lifesteal is always in force. 
  3. Axe Axe's Culling Blade Culling Blade - ignores any triggered heals if victim's health less than 250/350/450( 300/450/625)
  4. Reduces damage even from pure damage type.
