Experience in Dota 2

Experience - is the knowledge acquired through the practical actions.

How to gain the experience

Experience points are acquired when enemy heroes, enemy lane creeps and neutral creeps die nearby.

What for?

It is used to level up, to get new abilities, to increase all hero's attributes.

Important to know

  • Experience is equally shared by all heroes in a 1300 range.
  • Hero kills outside of 1300 range will give experience to the killer (who did the lasthit).
  • Denying an allied creep does't grant experience to you.
  • If you deny an allied creep the enemy will get 36 XP (in this case you deprive him of experience)
  • The exceptoin is lich and it's ability Sacrifice.
    Don't Sacrifice your creep in range of the enemy hero!

    He also gets experience for it. If you Sacrifice the creep outside of the XP range of your enemy, you'll get experience for 5 creeps and your enemy - only for 3.
    Otherwise you'll get experience for 4.5 creeps and your enemy for 3.5 ones.
    Also it is better to kill melee creep as it gives 1,5 more experience.
  • Denying an allied summoned unit or neutral creep does't grant experience to the enemy.
  • Enemy gets 36 XP instead of 25 for lasthit Mega creep.
  • Heroes get their experience even after level 25 (the highest level in game), even though they can't use it.
  • Building kills grant experience.
  • Summoned units (units created by spells or items) give 50% experience.
  • If the neutral creep was killed in range of several heroes - the experience will be shared equally between them.
  • Ancient creeps and Roshan grant experience only to the team which killed them.
  • You cannot get experience while dead (with the exception of situations when you have  Bloodstone which lets you to get experience while you are dead in range of 1000 from the place of thr death)

Level up

The hero's level is upgrade by acquiring experience points. Exprience points is granted by:

  • Lasthit lane creeps
  • Killing of enemy heroes
  • Destroying enemy buildings
  • Killing of enemy summoned units
  • Neutral creeps in woods
  • Ancient creeps
  • Killing of Roshan

Each level gives the attribute bonuses of the hero and a skill point. You have a choice: to spend the skill point on any of the Hero's spells (if it has't been maxed out - 4 for usual spells and 3 for ultimate); or to increase the hero's stats - additional 2 points each (Strength, Agility, and Intelligence).

Graph of XP dependent on the hero's level

In old DotA and DOTA 2 versions experience points incresed linearly. The amount of experience for the next level was calculated by this formula:
exp = next level * 100

With the last changes it's defferent.

As we see the graph grows linearly only in the range from 1 to 5 and from 13 to 25, and the range from 6 to 12 it was totally changed.

Let's think, why?

7 - 8 levels

These levels require the same 600 experience as level 6.

It gives the opportunity to realize your ultimate abilities and to maximize one of your abilities faster so then you can continue your dynamic game.

9 level

This level requires twice as many experinece (1200) than two previous levels.

This level barrier is so high in order to avoid "the snow ball" effect from the previous stage. Even if you lose fights being of 6-7 levels, you have an opportunity to come back to the game and to obtain the acceptable herolevel.

10 level

1000 experience - is a normal mean value.

11 level

This level requires the same 600 experience as 6-8 levels.

Obviously this is for upgrading ultimate ability and more dynamic game.

12 level

In my opinion it is one of the fundamental periods in game.

The 12th level requires 2200! experience points. That's why the heroes pass this stage as long as possible.

This enormous value lets to the decelerating heroes to obtain the acceptable level and to come back to the game. In fact, you can't realize your experience advantage for a long time if the enemies overtake you on the 11th level.

Theoretically, when you almost have the 12th level and your opponent has just obtained the 11th one, so you have no sense to fight.

Let us suppose there are 100-200 XP points left until the 12th level.

So, even with the same amount of the acquired experience you can obtain the 14th level (200 + 800 + 1400 = 2400) and maximize all your abilities when the enemy obtains the 12th level (2200). Exactly at that moment you need to make the enemy to fight (destroy the towers, kill Roshan, play aggressively)

Calculating the amount of experience aquired by allied heroes:

  • 1 ally: Enemy level - 1-4: 240, 280, 340, 420.
    Over the 4th level: L * 120 - 80 (Llevel of the killed hero);
  • 2 allies: Enemy level - 1-4: 155, 180, 215, 260.
    Over the 4th level: L * 65 - 10 (L - level of the killed hero);
  • 3 allies: Enemy level - 1-4: 70, 84, 104, 131.
    Over the 4th level: (121 * L - 110) / 3 (L - level of the killed hero);
  • 4 allies: Enemy level - 1-4: 50, 60, 75, 95.
    Over the 4th level: 30 * L - 30 (L - level of the killed hero);
  • 5 allies: Enemy level - 1-4: 39, 47, 59, 75.
    Over the 4th level: 24 * L - 25 (L - level of the killed hero).

As we can see, it is more profitable to kill the enemy hero by yourself or with one teammate.

Total experience for more than 2 heroes is about the same.

* Units which are not in the table don't grant XP. Foe example: pugna Pugna -  Nether Ward.

The Hand of Midas (HoM) use.

Hand of Midas

Experience: *2.5

Cooldown: 100 seconds.

Kills an enemy, neutral or summoned unit for additional gold and experience points.

Timing of purchasing HoM

  • Early! The sooner, the better! In the situations when you realize that it’s going to be standard or long game (after 30 minutes).
  • If you are left behind of the others in gold and experience.

Timing of not purchasing HoM

  • When your team considers a “push” strategy (fast destroying enemy buildings by means of your heroes’ special abilities).
  • When it is necessary to buy the required item (“Mekanism” or “Armlet of Mordiggian”) to fulfill a particular task in early game.

Which heroes should purchase “HoM”

Despite the plenty of heroes in the game, “HoM” is the item which is not effective for all. Nevertheless, there are game situations in which the amount of these heroes can vary.

Recommended heroes: life_stealer Lifestealer, furion Nature's Prophet, lone_druid Lone Druid.

As already mentioned above, the list of recommended heroes is small.
However, it is mostly purchased by “carry” heroes (heroes who can kill faster and more effectively because of their abilities) and by the heroes who left behind in level and gold.

The aim of purchasing “HoM”

Apart from appreciable growth of gold, “HoM” gives a significant boost to increase experience. That’s why it can be effectively used in woods where neutral creeps spawns are located.

Transmuted neutrals creeps

Let us suppose that you are on the lane and your priority task is to get maximum gold and experience in a short time. You managed to purchase early “HoM” (5-10 minute of the game). When one creep pack is over but the second one haven’t approached yet, - go to the forest. There, you should sell neutral creep which is the hardest to kill and gives more experience (you get more experience for melee creeps than for range one), After that, come back on the lane with the next lane creeps pack. Thus, after “HoM”’s cooldown you won’t be able to use it again in the ideal time. But losing several seconds, you will get more experience than you would get it from the lane creeps.

In late game, when the experience is not very important and getting gold is much more easier, pay attention on initial use this item in the forest. In the forest – use it on small neutral creeps.

More about "the Golden side" of the item read in the article about gold.

Deny allied creeps and enemies

Denying occurs when a hero lands a killing blow on an allied creep, hero or building.

How does it happen?

A (Attack) + Left mouse button - on target.

What is it used for?

Denying an allied unit prevents the opponents from earning gold and experience.

The amount of health when target is deniable.

  • Allied creep - under 50% health. The denied unit grants 36 experience points and no gold for both of sides.
  • Building - less 10%;
  • Allied heroes can be denied only if they are under 25% health and afflicted with certain buffs:
  • venomancer Venomancer -  Venomous Gale;
    queenofpain Queen of Pain -  Shadow Strike;
    doom_bringer Doom -  Doom;
