Magic resistance

Magic resistance - it is an attribute that reduces magical damage.

 

Features of magic resistance

  • All heroes possess 25% magic resistance.
  • The exceptions are  visage Visage - 10% and meepo Meepo - 35%.
  • Reduces magic, composite and unversal damage types. 
  • Some creatures possess magic resistance too. 

 

 

Features of magic damage

  • Armor does not effect on reduction of magic damage.
  • It does not deal any damage to the magic immuned units.
  • Ethereal units will take 40%-50% amplified magical damage. 
  • Magic damage is blicked or reduced by triggered heals.

 

 

Decrease and increase of magic damage

  • For most heroes possess 25% magic resist, it means an ability's magic damage is 75%.
    Any additional effects will reduce the remaining 75% of damage by their resistance.
  • Magic resistance items do not stack.
    Only the most powerful magic resistance effect will provide a bonus.

 

 

Formula for calculating of the incoming magic damage

magic damage × (1 + A) × (1 − R1) × (1 − R2) × (1 − R3) × (1 − R4

  • A - the sum of the abilities' value that increase magic damage on target (for example, Decrepify Decrepify)
  • R1 - natural resistance (25% by default)
  • R2 - magic resistance of item (Hood of Defiance)
  • R3 - magic resistance of the first ability (Spell Shield)
  • R4 - magic resistance of the second ability

Note: Any value-percentage divide by 100, and then calculete by the formula. Example: 10% - 0.1 or 40% = 0.4.

 

 

Examples

  1. Clinkz Clinkz is damaged by Crystal Maiden Crystal Maiden Crystal Nova Crystal Nova of the 3rd level (200 damage)
    Damage rate: (1 − 0.25)  = 0.75 = 75%
    Damage: 200 * 0.75 = 150
  2. Meepo Meepo is damaged by Pugna Pugna Nether Blast Nether Blast of the 4th level (325), if he is under Decrepify Decrepify (+50%)
    Damage rate: (1 + 0.5) * (1 − 0.35)  = 0.975 = 97.5%
    Damage: 325 * 0.975 = 317
  3. antimage Anti-Mage with Spell Shield Spell Shield of the 4th level (50%) and with  Hood Of Defiance (30%),
    lina Lina use  Laguna Blade Laguna Blade of the 3rd level on him (950 damage), using with  Ethereal Blade (+40%)
    Damage rate: (1 + 0.4) * (1 − 0.25) * (1 − 0.3) * (1 − 0.5) = 0.3675 = 36.75%
    Damage: 950 * 0.3675 = 349

 

 

The formula for calculating magic resistance

(1 - (1 − R1) × (1 − R2) × (1 − R3) × (1 − R4)) × 100

  • R1 - natural resistance (25% by default)
  • R2 - magic resistance of item (Hood of Defiance)
  • R3 - magic resistance of the first ability (Spell Shield)
  • R4 - magic resistance of the second ability

 

Examples

  1. A hero without items and abilitites.
    Magical resistance: (1 - (1 - 0.75) ) *100 = 25%
  2. visage Visage with  Cloak (15%) has full charged Gravekeeper's Cloak Gravekeeper's Cloak of the 2nd level (24%)
    Magic resistance: ( 1 - ( 1 - 0.1 ) * ( 1 - 0.15 ) * ( 1 - 0.24 ) ) = 41.86%

Amplification of magic resistance

  1. Enemy heroes in general deal magic damage ( Zeus Zeus, Venomancer Venomancer, Earthshaker Earthshaker, Skywrath Mage Skywrath Mage, Jakiro Jakiro)
    In early and mid game  Cloak is nice item.
    If most of spells have stun, it is better to think about  Black King Bar.
  2. Magic resistance does not stack directly and does not amplified effectively. So heroes with 35-40% and higher resistance would be advantageous to purchase something else.
  3. If you have a small health pull, it is better to think about the direct health amplification.   Hood Of Defiance gives only 100-200 additional HP against magic damage.
    Accordingly it is better to have at least 1000-1200 HP.
    In some rare situations when you have healing and enemy can not kill you with procast, you can buy items for lower thresholds of maximum health. In that case healings would be very effective.
  4. When you have already items that make you immuned to magic, do not purchase the items for amplification of magic resistance.
  5. Purchase 1  Hood Of Defiance due to the assembling of  Pipe of Insight for your team.

Unlike magic resistance, magic damage stacks multiplicatively.

  • S(A) - the sum of the abilities that amplify spell damage on a target.

    Damage amplification: (1 + (0.5 + 0.30 + 0.25) ) * 100 = 185%
    Damage amplification to standard hero: 
    1.85 * ( 1 - 0.25 )  * 100 = 138.75%
  2. lina Lina Laguna Blade Laguna Blade of the 3rd level (950 of damage) +  Ethereal Blade (+40%) to standard hero
    Damage amplification: (1 + (0.4) ) * 100 = 140%
    Damage amplification to standard hero: 
    1.40 * ( 1 - 0.25 )  * 100 = 105%
    Damage: 
    950 * 1.05 = 997
  3. Huskar Huskar - Life Break Life Break of the 3rd level with  Aghanim's Scepeter deals damage equaled to 65% of target's HP.
    If it is a standard hero with 25% magic resistance, you need: (1 + A) * 0.75 * 0.65 more or equal to 1. It is necessary to kill the target instantly.
    A = 1 / 0/75 * 0.65 - 1 = 1.051
    You need to have +105.1% and more, e.g.,  Ethereal Blade (40%) +  Veil of Discord (+25%) +  Soul Catcher (+50%) = 115%

Anti-magic Shell

Magic resistance reduces all magic damage, and anti-magic Shell effects absorb a set amount of magical damage.

When it absorbs the certain amount of damage then it expires. But when it is active, it takes take any magical or universal damage.

Firstly it absorbs the damage, and then decrease resistance.

 

If a 700-damage spell is cast on a unit with a 400 HP anti-magic shell, the shell will absorb 400 damage. The other 300 damage will be reduced by magic resistance.

 Pipe of Insight - does not effect on units that have been shelled in the last 50 seconds. 

 

 

Summary

  1. Magic resistance items do not stack.
    Only the most powerful magic resistance effect will provide a bonus.
  2. All heroes possess 25% magic resistance.
    The exceptions are  visage Visage - 10% and meepo Meepo - 35%
  3.  Pipe of Insight - does not effect on units that have been shelled in the last 50 seconds. 
    There is no sense to purchase more than one Pipe for the whole team.
  4. Magic resistance does not stack directly.
    Magical damage also can be amplified, although the summarized amplification is not as effective as the summarized magic resistance, because damage amplification summed before multiplying.
  5. Ethereal units takes 40-50% more damage.
  6. Situations when it is better to amplify your magic resistances are described above.
