FV304 (9.1)

Kirill «Kirilloid» Ponomarev

Due to great dynamics and high rate of fire along with low-power and accurate gun makes FV304 a very good war vehicle to bring much trouble to your enemy in any battle. This “little asshole” is much popular among those who prefer artillery.

This is a British SPG of the sixth level. It features high rate of fire and precise gun, great dynamics and speed, tiny size with good coefficient of camouflage.

Historical background

GB77 FV304 is a project of light SPG, developed by the company Vickers. The development started in 1947, however the prototype was ready only in 1953. By this time the concept of SPG got obsolete and the project was closed.

The original idea of the developers was to create a series of light armored vehicles. In 1947 the Ministry of Defense outlined the development of three additional series of war vehicles: FV200 (the series of heavy cruiser tanks, which resulted in the creation of Conqueror), FV4000 (the series of middle-weighted cruisers, Centurion) and FV300 (the series of light armored vehicles).

There is a range of vehicles built on the basis of FV300:

  • FV311 — Armored Load Carrier
  • FV310 — Light APC
  • FV309 — Vehicle of the Royal Artillery
  • FV308 — Field Artillery Tractor
  • FV307 — Radar vehicle
  • FV306 — light-armored ARV
  • FV305 — 5.5” SPG - BL 5.5” Middle gun
  • FV304 — 25 pound SPG - 25 pounder gun/howitzer
  • FV303 — 20 pound SPG - 20 pounder
  • FV302 — GPO/CPO Command vehicle
  • FV301 — 21 tons tank with the 77 mm gun (made on the basis of A46)

FV304 in the game

Fighting efficiency

FV304 is very similar to Bishop, but without armor and with a much better dynamics. There’s no other SPG in the game that enjoys such a big speed of 72 km per hour. This is an obvious advantage which a player should use, because the top gun still shoots as far as 500 meters, which is short and by no means requires active movement all across the battle field. In the meantime it is necessary to remember that being artillery, GB77 FV304 is of high priority for the enemies. In case of detection a player should rely on high speed of the tank and its small size. Additionally a very good dynamics and small size enable the tank to make unique maneuvers. For instance, one can drive to the stern of the enemies and to circle around the slow TT or AT- SPG.

  • High accuracy, high rate of fire, and prompt sweep.
  • Mortar trajectory of the shells provides the possibility to shoot over the majority of obstacles
  • Good angles of horizontal aiming
  • Big allowance of ammunitions
  • High maximal speed
  • Closed turret enables to mount the improved ventilation
  • Small size

  • Small distance of shooting and low shell speed
  • Low damage per hit and penetration
  • Low traverse speed even for SPG
  • Low visibility
  • Poor passing ability on weak grounds

Notwithstanding the small size of the SPG, the crew compounds 5 persons. It is one additional Loader compared to Bishop’s crew. It is better to place him near the Birch Gun

Perks and skills should be taught in the following order:

  • First of all the commander should master Sixth Sense and the other staff should learn Camouflage. This will increase the survival of your vehicle, because if detected you have a chance “to escape”.
  • Second, you can improve Brother in Arms to increase a fair effectiveness of the vehicle.
  • Third, the skills should be mastered as follows: Camouflage by the commander, Clutch Braking by the driver, Snap Shot by the Gunner, Adrenaline Rush and Situation Awareness by the Loader.

These skills will be enough for effective performance. Furthermore you can learn perks upon your decision. As a result we have the following build:

Equipment, consumables and ammunition

The following standard equipment for an SPG with closed turret can be installed: Gun Rammer, Enhanced Gun Laying Drive and Improved Ventilation. The latter can be replaced with Camouflage Net, as the vehicle often fights in the epicenter of the battle and thus the hiding is essential.

You can install standard consumables: Small First Aid Kit, Small Repair Kit and Extinguisher. I’d suggest replacing the Extinguisher with Gasoline or Pudding and Tea, because you will be often moving all around the battlefield.

The allowance of ammunition with fully equipped tank has only 64 projectiles.

Therefore we have such tank:x

The use in the battlefield

The first and perhaps the main rule is to move all the time. The range of shooting is only 500 meters. Therefore you need to move all the time. The dynamics and the speed of the vehicle foster such game strategy. Find the bushes, hide in the surroundings and to move all the time.

The second rule is to get your enemies out of their covers. This is the main task of this vehicle. Its gun has a very good lofted trajectory, which enables to throw shells over any covers. Thus the vehicle can lure the enemies to be shot by your allies or kill them slowly.

FV304 in team battles

After a global artillery nerf and the introduction of the vehicles of the 9-10 level, there’s no need to use this type of tanks in the team battles. However FV304 can become a war vehicle to revive the glory of the artillery.

This tank has excellent parameters of speed and dynamics that enable the machine to move fast around the battlefield. Due to the low silhouette and good camouflage indicator the vehicle can remain covert even in the hottest battles. Precise fast shooting gun enables to fire continuously, however the low indicator of penetration (which is 57 mm only) doesn’t allow bringing much damage. This tank can be used in the open maps, where setups of light and lightly armored vehicles are used.

The developers often make balance corrections, changing particular parameters or even adding new shells. It is supposed that adding high-explosive will allow using FV304 in the format 7/42, but no one knows if it will happen.
